We are very pleased that you are interested in this vital role, which sits at the heart of our improvement journey for Children’s Services at Liverpool City Council.

With over 76,000 pupils and 172 schools, Liverpool’s education system is a major contributor to improving outcomes for our city’s children and young people. Praised by Ofsted in a recent monitoring visit, we've committed to a detailed and wide-ranging improvement plan, laying strong foundations for necessary changes. The inspectors found that we have made improvements in a short space of time, and they recognise that we know the areas of weakness we still need to address.

We are certainly not complacent, and recognise that there still remains considerable work to do across a number of areas to make the real and lasting change our children and young people deserve. But this was never going to be a quick fix, and we are laying strong foundations to build on the improvements we are making in our drive to make children’s services in Liverpool one of the best in the country.

The successful candidate’s in-tray will include planning for an expanding secondary cohort; managing increasing demand for SEND provision; and addressing levels of exclusions and suspensions (as well as persistent absence) which are higher than we want them to be. You will also oversee a refresh of our Education Strategy, with a strengthened focus on partnership working; and manage the process of bringing a number of statutory education functions back in-house.

This is a truly exciting time to join us as we work towards achieving the best Children's Services and becoming employer of choice. We are keen to meet experienced, resilient and determined candidates who can see the huge potential for this wonderful city, and who bring strong leadership and professional credibility to get us there.

Join us: be part of our forward and innovative vision for our children and young people.
